What is SEAOHUN?

Established in 2011, SEAOHUN is a network of 10 founding universities from four countries in South East Asia that are collaborating to build One Health capacity and academic partnerships in the South East Asia region. These partnerships include government, local and regional stakeholders, and the overall community.  SEAOHUN members partner with staff and faculty from USAID’s RESPOND project to foster sustainable trans-disciplinary capacity building to respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases.

Vision, Mission and Objectives

Vision:  A Network fostering sustainable trans-disciplinary capacity building to respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases
Mission: To leverage the training, education and research capacities of the university network to build the skills, knowledge and attitude base for One Health leaders

  • To promote and advance the One Health approach for control of emerging and re-emerging infectious and zoonotic diseases (EZDs)
  • To improve the competencies of One Health professionals
  • To build a One Health evidence base through research activity
  • To build cadres of trained professionals to be One Health current and future leaders

What One Health is

The One Health approach recognizes that human health, animal health, and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, and that collaboration across the sectors is needed to achieve more rapid, mutually beneficial and effective responses.

Addressing zoonotic infectious disease outbreaks from the perspective of a single sector, and acting without considering the other perspectives and the complexity of the entire system, can lead to slower and more costly response, with unintentionally negative consequences for multiple sectors.

The One Health approach is critical for multiple sectors to achieve their respective missions more effectively, and for promoting, improving, and defending the health and wellbeing of all species by enhancing multidisciplinary cooperation and collaboration among physicians, veterinarians, and other scientific and environmental health professionals.
